I once suggested to Bernadette that we jam -- her on typewriter, me on guitar. She laughed but seemed tickled by the idea. Phil later sneakily recorded some audio of Bernadette typing on his phone and sent it to me. I never found spare time to make anything out of it and put it aside. For Bernadette's memorial at the Poetry Project this year, Phil asked me to try to play a song to the audio of her typing that he sent. I went back and listened. It was pretty short and there wasn't much to make a song with. But I played around with it awhile and came up with an idea that involved making a longer track out of the typing that was there. I performed it live at the Project and then went home and made a studio version. Some parts of this are me making loops out of her typing. But there are several long chunks of her playing live as originally performed. Uh, I mean, TYPING as she originally WROTE.

(As you can see, I remain convinced she was a brilliant free jazz typewriter percussionist!)

Immediately after recording the studio version, when I'd been sending a lot of time listening to this recording of Bernadette typing for weeks, I recorded From Memory. It was an improvised acoustic guitar track recorded on my phone. I was hoping to find a way to play the guitar LIKE I was typing on it, or to maybe make it sound like a guitar and a typewriter playing live together at the same time.
